Cook Safe

The Cook Safe programme delivered by Scottish Fire & Rescue (SFR) and Sparcs SCIO operated in the South East of Glasgow.

The clients who were identified and took part in the programme were considered at serious risk from the dangers of fire and would benefit from input about safer cooking practices, as well as improving their knowledge about healthier eating.

The programme was a model of excellent partnership working with other public organisations.

The main aims of the Cook Safe programme were:

• To improve eating habits
• Illustrate safer cooking practices
• Provide practical demonstrations
• Provision of advice and information on home and fire safety
• Target the more vulnerable members of our communities.

This was achieved, by delivering a programme designed to promote healthy eating, to challenge people's perception of risk and make them safer within their homes, ultimately making them safer within their communities.

This initiative also targeted domestic house fires (kitchen fires) and also promoted home fire safety awareness in the City of Glasgow.

SFR works in close partnership with other public organisations, as well as the voluntary sector and local communities to deliver services that meet the needs of our communities, to challenge and change their perception of risk, ultimately promoting the health, safety and welfare of communities.

Cook Safe Cooking Demonstrations

cook safe cooking demonstrations were arranged for groups no matter how large or small.

The program was delivered over two hours, with a practical cooking demonstration, a Chip Pan Demonstration and a home and fire safety talk. This is delivered by Sparcs and SFR staff.
The initial aims and objectives were to:
Reduce fire casualties and fire deaths
o Reduce accidental dwelling house fires
o Reduce risk to individuals and local communities
o Introduce safer cooking practices
o Increase peoples knowledge about healthier eating
o Increase peoples knowledge about home and fire safety.

Cook Safe Cooking Casses & Fire Safety at Home

cook safe cooking classes and Fire Safety at Home classes were arranged for a diverse range of groups with the support of SFR over several years with many positive outcomes for individuals. All delivered in an informative yet informal manner.
